Subject: Updates to the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program (CSSP)

This notice provides an update on recent CSSP activities to strengthen food safety measures in shellfish areas adjacent to wastewater treatments plants.

An updated assessment of risk management measures has indicated a need to further enhance bivalve mollusc product safety through additional dilution of Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) effluent in some receiving harvest waters. As a result, the CSSP partners are adjusting the prohibited area boundaries in select locations. This will further minimize bivalve shellfish exposure to viral contamination near WWTPs and better protect public health.

These adjustments to selected prohibited area boundaries are underway and will be completed in the coming months. While the impact in many areas is minimized due to pre-existing CSSP harvest prohibitions, other active harvest areas will be impacted and the CSSP partners have already advised locally-affected harvesters and other industry representatives.

These changes build on past activities (refer to previous industry notices issued in 2008 and 2009) linked to managing the risk of viruses associated with WWTP failures.

It is important that federally registered shellfish processors are aware of these prohibited area changes. Further information on the CSSP and Guidance for Acceptable HACCP Controls for Live Molluscan Shellfish Processing Establishments (Bulletin 25) can be found on the CFIA's website.
