HEALTH HAZARD ALERT
HAWAIIAN KETTLE STYLE POTATO CHIPS, SWEET MAUI ONION, MAY CONTAIN SALMONELLA BACTERIA
OTTAWA, March 2, 2010 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. are warning the public not to consume Hawaiian Kettle Style Potato Chips - Sweet Maui Onion, because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.
Hawaiian Kettle Style Potato Chips - Sweet Maui Onion, item# 762459, product of USA, is sold in a 908 g package bearing UPC 0 11594 03201 8. All Best Before code dates from 10 MR 09 (March 9, 2010) to 10 JN 07 (June 7, 2010), inclusive are affected by this alert. This product has been distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a food borne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
The importer, Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd., Ottawa, ON, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
