HEALTH HAZARD ALERT

CERTAIN SPROUTS ALIVE BRAND SPROUTS MAY CONTAIN SALMONELLA BACTERIA

Salmonella Investigation

OTTAWA, August 26, 2009 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Living Foods Ltd. are warning the public not to consume certain Sprouts Alive brand products described below because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The following products bearing best before date codes from August 29, 2009 to September 11, 2009 inclusive are affected by this recall:

The best before date is shown in one of the following formats: "Best Before dd mm yy", "EX mmm dd yy", or "EX mm dd yy". For example, a best before date of September 11, 2009 could appear as "Best Before 11 SE 09", "EX SEP 11 09", or "EX 09 11 09".

These products have been distributed in Alberta, however, they may also have been distributed in British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

The manufacturer, Living Foods Ltd., Innisfail, AB, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
