We are excited to present the first edition of the quarterly publication from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), The Chronicle. It will provide updates on the Agency's activities and highlight some of the changes we have underway.

The Agency is addressing an ever-changing and more global environment. We are innovating to keep pace with changes in industry, in society and in our world.

Canadians deserve and expect to have confidence in the food they eat. A hallmark of having one of the strongest food safety systems in the world is that we continuously improve. As a regulator, the CFIA's role is to enforce our acts and regulations.

Everyone wins when the rules are followed – the results are a healthier plant and animal resource base, better food safety for Canadians, and improved confidence in our system, leading to greater market access for industry.

The CFIA is developing a more service-focussed approach and working to provide more useful information and tools to help make it easier to understand and comply with regulations. Some of these changes, like My CFIA, are currently being implemented and others, where prudent, will have a more gradual introduction, allowing for adjustments and improvements as we go.

Safeguarding animal and plant health and food safety is a shared responsibility. We are strong believers in the value of partnership and we look forward to building on our existing relationships and forging new ones. We need to involve businesses large and small, all levels of government, non-governmental organizations, and the community at large.

As we continue, we'd like to hear from you. If you have suggestions for articles to be included in future editions of the newsletter, let us know. There are various ways to communicate with us and provide feedback, whether it is through CFIA staff or through one of the channels provided at the end of this newsletter.

We look forward to sharing more news about the Agency in future editions, and welcome the opportunity to hear from you.
